On October 6, 2024, the West Central Seventh-day Adventist Church hosted its inaugural 5K Walk/Run, aptly named “Raise The Roof 5K for West Central,” raising over $21,000 in just two months. This fundraising event aimed to address the urgent need for roof repairs at the church, which had been relying on buckets to catch rainwater during heavy storms.
With the blessing of their newly appointed health ministry team, led by Patrice and Rebecca Jean, the church aimed not only to raise funds but also to promote fitness within the community. Pastor Ralph Shelton emphasized the church's significance, calling it “The Biggest House On Our Block” and highlighting the responsibility to maintain it.
The event, enthusiastically supported by the church leadership team, attracted almost 50 participants through a grassroots outreach campaign that included "old school" mail correspondence and modern social media strategies. Participants enjoyed perfect weather as they walked a scenic trail at Miller Meadow in Maywood, Illinois, and were encouraged by a sense of community spirit and fellowship.
“I was pleased to see so many people come together,” said Shelton. “The Lord blessed us with perfect conditions for the event, and the camaraderie was uplifting.”
Each participant received a medal, certificate of participation, and a T-shirt featuring the “Raise The Roof 5K” logo. Additionally, they will be gifted a copy of The Ministry of Healing by Ellen G. White to reinforce the message of stewardship over one's health.
The race recognized outstanding participants, with medals awarded to Manuel Davila for first place (gold), Agustin Orozco for second (silver), and his son Diego for third (bronze).
In reflecting on the event, Shelton expressed gratitude for the community's support: “The combination of faith and works has been exemplified today. We are thankful for all who donated, participated, or sponsored a participant.”
As the West Central Church moves forward in its mission to repair God's house, the leadership team remains hopeful for further miracles and testimonies of God's goodness. “We believe our God is able to do more than we could ever ask or think,” concluded Shelton, “and we say ‘Amen’ to that.”
